South African artist Marcus Neustetter uses light to create installations in places where darkness is often associated with crime, poverty and a legacy of apartheid.

“By dropping a little bit of light into it, it changes the interaction people have with that context and hopefully the way they see the city,” he says.

He recently visited the National Museum of African Art in Washington DC, where the BBC’s Jane O’Brien caught up with him.

Filmed by Allen McGreevey, edited by Joni Mazer-Field, produced by Mat Morrison.
